Why an Affirmation Can Help to Change Your Mindset
From Affirmations to Activations
Affirmations aren’t the first step, they’re the whipped cream on garbage if you haven’t dealt with the mess underneath. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: you can’t layer something cute on top of unresolved issues and expect transformation.
But once you’ve done the deeper work, affirmations can help align you with your future self. Even better than an affirmation? An activation.
I first discovered this idea through fellow Canadian Mimi Bouchard’s book Activate Your Future Self. It’s now a regular read for me, a reset button for my mindset. Mimi later launched the Activations app, a library of motivational audios paired with music tracks for journaling, visualization, winding down, or even cleaning the house. I’ve been using it for six months, and it’s my favourite before-bed and first-thing-in-the-morning tool for shifting my mindset in minutes.
Mindset touches so many areas of entrepreneurship, and affirmations are just one way to rewrite the story you tell yourself. Affirmations as Intentional Thinking
I remember coming across a line from Brooke Castillo that stopped me in my tracks: “You get to choose your thoughts. So why would you choose to think anything that’s not in your favor?”
That hit me because it’s exactly what affirmations are about. They’re not about pretending everything is perfect or chanting words you don’t believe. They’re about choosing thoughts that serve you instead of sabotage you.
For me, affirmations became less about “positive thinking” and more about intentional thinking. When I write them down in my journal or listen to Activations, I’m reminding myself that I have the power to choose the narrative. And that choice; day after day, is what shifts my mindset.

Turning Affirmations Into Daily Practice
The truth is, affirmations don’t work if they stay stuck in your head. They only start to shift your mindset when you bring them into your daily routine, when they become part of how you journal, how you visualize, and how you talk to yourself in tough moments.
That’s why I think of affirmations less as “positive phrases” and more as practices. They’re small, intentional habits that remind me to choose thoughts that serve me, even when imposter syndrome or self-doubt tries to creep in.
Here are three ways I’ve found to make affirmations practical and powerful:
-
Journal Your Affirmations
Writing them down daily creates a record of growth you can return to when doubt shows up. Journaling turns affirmations into evidence. -
Pair Them With Visualization or Mindfulness
Saying the words is one thing; imagining the outcome makes them believable. Visualization strengthens the emotional connection to your affirmation. -
Shift From Affirmation to Activation
Guided audios, like Mimi Bouchard’s Activations app`, move affirmations from passive repetition to active embodiment. Words paired with music can change your state in minutes.
The Space Between Saying and Believing
I remember reading Jen Sincero’s You Are a Badass at Making Money and resonating with her affirmation: “I love money and money loves me.” I’ll admit, I’ve still got subconscious work to do before I can fully embody that. But even acknowledging the gap is part of the growth.
That’s the truth about affirmations: they’re not magic spells. They’re practices. They’re reminders. They’re tools to help you rewrite the story you tell yourself. And when paired with journaling, visualization, or activations, they become catalysts for mindset shifts that last.
Expanding Your Mindset, One Horizon at a Time
Confidence, clarity, resilience; they don’t just show up. They’re built through reps, reflection, and intentional practices. Affirmations are one of those practices, and journaling is the perfect place to start.
For me, journaling has been more than a habit; it’s been a mirror. Each affirmation I write reflects the mindset I’m building, even on days when doubt feels louder than belief. And over time, those pages become proof of growth, evidence that I’ve already handled more than I give myself credit for.
