Well, This Was Embarassing

The version of my story I don't usually tell

People would often tell me how confident I seemed, or how it looked like I had it all together, but that was never the story that was running in my head. It was more like Who am I to even DO this?”

Sound familiar? You’re not alone.

Behind the Highlight Reel

After speaking at an event for 150 female founders about pushing past imposter syndrome to get more visibility, I posted a clip of my talk on Instagram.

A friend from university DM’d me: "You’re SO cool!"

Without missing a beat, I replied: "I feel like a fraud half the time."

Ironic, right?

Even with 20 years of experience as a publicist and speaker, my imposter syndrome still showed up regularly, saying that I wasn’t good enough, that I didn’t know enough, that I could have done better.

Building a business is about creating something meaningful, and I made the Top 100 Female Founder Resource List to save you time. We can go further, faster, with the right tools at our disposal. But if you’re battling an inner-voice saying, Who are you to do this? self-doubt can hold you back from confidently building your dream.

Emma Grede, author of Start with Yourself and the CEO of Skims & Good American, says:

“The most important relationship you'll ever have is the relationship you have with yourself. And so you’ve got to be real careful that your biggest enemy isn't living between your two ears, right?

When you start a daily practice that says I am going to speak to myself [kindly], this is going to rewire you. It's a beautiful way to think about talking to yourself in a kind and cheering and empathetic way, it’s a form of excellence with yourself.”

It confirmed to me that taking five minutes before and after work to acknowledge myself is a habit worth keeping. I mean, I’m certainly not going to argue with one of Forbes’ Richest Self-Made Women.

Confidence is a Business Asset

When I found out that 75% of women leaders experience imposter syndrome at some point in their careers, I decided to do something about it. I started by creating a series of journal prompts that I started using every morning and evening to shift the narrative I was carrying around. To help me see my progress instead of just my gaps. To recognize the wins I was breezing past because I was already focused on the next goal.

And it worked!

I started showing up differently. In my business, in the decisions I was making, in the way I talked about what I was building. And I kept thinking: every woman entrepreneur I know needs this.
