How to Get Your Product Featured in a Subscription Box
Subscription boxes are a powerful way for female founder to get products into the hands of curated, loyal subscribers.
But how do you actually get your product featured in one? Is it a paid opportunity? Do they buy from you? Or is it more of a partnership?
We're excited to be in our DREAM subscription box this September, so it only seemed fitting to go behind-the-scenes of what it's like, and how to get your product featured in a subscription box.

Welcome Carol Gavhane, from Sparkle Hustle Grow as our first guest blogger! Sparkle Hustle Grow is the #1 subscription box for women entrepreneurs. She gives us the behind-the-scenes of what it's like, and how to get your product featured in a subscription box.
1. Pay-to-Play: You Pay to Be Featured
This is one of the most common models, especially with larger, more established boxes.
How it works:
-
You, the brand, provide the product for free or at a very low cost. You may sometimes pay a placement fee to be featured.
-
The subscription box company includes and markets your product to their subscribers.
-
In exchange, you get exposure and often, social media or email promotion.
Why brands choose this:
-
Visibility to thousands of subscribers.
-
Potential for long-term customer acquisition.
-
Great for launching a new product or reaching a niche market.
Watch out for:
-
ROI isn’t guaranteed.
-
Placement fees, which can range from a few hundred to thousands of dollars.
2. The Box Buys Your Product - Wholesale or Discounted
Some subscription box companies will purchase your product at a discounted or wholesale rate.
How it works:
-
They purchase directly from a wholesale platform that you’re on so there’s no price negotiation. Or, you negotiate a price per unit that’s lower than wholesale.
-
They purchase a set quantity (e.g., 100 - 5,000 units).
-
You ship the products to them for inclusion in a future box.
Why brands like it:
-
You get paid for your product!
-
You get exposure, often a feature on social or their marketing materials.
-
You’re not taking on a huge financial risk.
Ideal for:
-
Small brands looking to offset production costs.
-
Companies with extra inventory or strong margins.

3. Trade or Collab Model: Free Product for Exposure
Especially with niche or emerging subscription boxes, you might enter a trade-based agreement.
How it works:
-
You provide free products (often a few hundred to a few thousand units).
-
The box includes your product and promotes you across social/email/social media.
-
No money changes hands as it’s mutual exposure.
Good fit if:
-
You're launching and want awareness more than revenue.
-
You can handle the cost of producing and shipping units without compensation.
-
You trust the box has real reach and engagement.
Final Tips for Getting Featured
-
Research the box: Make sure it aligns with your brand values and target audience.
-
Have your pitch ready: Highlight what makes your product unique, include photos, and be clear on what you’re offering.
-
Start small: Local, niche, or indie boxes are often more open to newer brands.
-
Negotiate: Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need (whether it’s payment, promotion, or partnership terms).
-
Be realistic: Exposure doesn’t always equal sales, but it can open doors to retail, PR, and future customers.
Getting into a subscription box can boost big ROI results in the long run, or be a break-even branding play. The key is knowing your goals going in. Whether you’re aiming for sales, visibility, or community, there’s likely a box and a model that fits.

So, how do we at Sparkle Hustle Grow decide what products make it into the box?
📬 Pitch us here! We’re always on the lookout for fresh, exciting products - especially from fellow woman-owned brands (yes, that includes books, too!).
Here’s what we consider when curating each month’s box:
✅ Product Fit
Does your product align with the vibe and mission of Sparkle Hustle Grow?
We ask ourselves: Would our subscribers love this? And if we’ve already featured something similar, especially from a direct competitor, we may hold off to keep things fresh.
🗓️ Timing
Each box is built around a monthly theme. If your product is a perfect fit but something very similar was just featured last month, we might not have the right timing right now, but that doesn’t mean never! Sometimes it’s all about the right moment.
📦 Size & Dimensions
Will your product physically fit in our box? Keep in mind:
-
Each box contains 4–5 curated items.
-
Everything must fit together like puzzle pieces.
Products that are compact, lightweight, and easy to pack have a better shot at making it in.
💸 Pricing
We’d love to pay full retail for every item but subscription boxes run on tight margins.
For example, if the box retails for $50 (with free U.S. shipping!) and includes five products, we simply can’t spend $25 on just one item. Keep this in mind when proposing your pricing and quantities.
We truly value every pitch and love discovering new brands through this process. So even if it’s not a fit right now, you might hear from us down the road!
